therapy for depression

We’ve all experienced feelings of depression from time to time; sometimes lasting longer than we’d like. Maybe you’ve broken up with the love of your life or lost a close family member. It’s painful and you’re depressed but in time, those feelings of depression subside and you can smile again.

But what happens when those feelings of depression don’t subside? What happens when you don’t want to get out of bed in the mornings, don’t want to shower, or don’t want to see friends? No matter how hard you try, it doesn’t get better after a week…a month….6 months….a year.

Some of the most common signs and symptoms of depression include:

  • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, and/or pessimism

  • Increased fatigue, restlessness, and/or irritability

  • Insomnia or hypersomnia

  • Excessive crying

  • Lack of pleasure in activities that were once enjoyable

  • Significant weight loss or gain

  • Poor concentration or motivation

  • Suicidal thoughts or thoughts of death

Depression is real and painful.
But it’s not your fault.

Depression is not about being weak or lazy. It’s not just a matter of “pushing” yourself to get things done. You didn’t ask to be depressed. And it’s certainly not something you should be ashamed of. In fact, for some people, depression has a biological component and recovery may include medications. Whatever the cause of your depression, therapy can help. I can help.

What does therapy for depression look like?

I wish I could snap my fingers and help you feel better immediately. I know how painful depression can be and it can feel as if you’re drowning in sadness or hopelessness. Recovery from depression can feel tough, especially when some days just taking a shower feels like the toughest thing you’ve ever done.  Together, we’ll come up with a plan that feels doable for you. I use a variety of therapeutic techniques that can help you with both the emotional and behavioral aspects of depression. I’ll be with you every step of the way. Here are some of the things we’ll do to help you with depression:

  • Understand the roots of your depression

  • Let go of the shame and stigma associated with depression

  • Manage the cycle of thoughts and feelings that contribute to depression

  • Learn to find pleasure again in activities you once enjoyed

  • Practice living in the present moment through mindfulness exercises

  • Increase social connections with friends and family

  • Consider alternative treatments such as medication management.
